<King> is a hostile NPC notorious for its ability to summon other Piece race enemies.
Very often, it will use Summon piece to spawn more enemies, and there's a possibility of one of the spawned enemies being another <King>. It prefers to attack from range with its thrown weapon (usually a stone, but rarely it may be a grenade or shuriken). Despite its speed score, it rarely moves, and when it does it's only one square every few turns.
With the above in mind, aim to kill it first when fighting large groups. Don't underestimate it either, as it is considerably resilient.
While it might sound like a good pet for its ability to summon, in practice it's a terrible idea, since said summoned monsters will *always* spawn hostile, immediately attacking you or your pets, <King> included.
Evolution[]

In Elona+, <King> can be evolved into a Checkmate using an <evolution heart>, gaining 20 strength, 20 magic, 10 speed, and a new sprite.
Miscellaneous[]
Wishing[]
cardking
creates a card of <King>.figureking
creates a figurine of <King>.
Customization[]
The sprite number for <King> is 249.
Changes in Elona+[]
As mentioned above, <King> can now be evolved with the respective heart item. It also learns the Weight Lifting and Firearm skills.
The <King> and all other summoner-type NPCs, if made into a pet, will no longer be able to summon monsters; however, they still waste turns trying to do so ("Nothing happens...").
They also have a very rare chance (~0.125%) of dropping a King heart.
Trivia[]
- As the Piece race represents chess as a whole, this NPC represents the king piece. <King> moves one square every few turns, mimicking the movement rules for the king in chess.
