Cards and figurines have a chance of being dropped by NPCs upon death. When they are displayed in a museum, the museum increases rank, attracting more visitors and thus more profit. Museum rank increases by a smaller amount from cards than it does from figures, however. Card decks can be bought in stores, but you can't buy cards from stores.
Cards also have the additional property of being able to be put into decks when they are used. Decks, however, are very rare items, and as there is no way to remove cards from decks and no way of getting any use from cards in decks, it is a better idea to simply save cards and put them into a museum.
In Elona+[]
Card packs can be bought from Child Wel in Larna for Music Tickets. Also, you can fill your deck with unique cards and turn them in to Ssil the undead witch in the Abode of witch, who will reward you for every 50 different cards. More info can be found in the Live in This World page.
Decks can now be used to play a card game against NPCs. A playable deck must first be built by using the deck item and choosing a minimum of 30 cards to use. Cards are categorized by colors, neutral, or legendary, and typically have a mana cost, attack, life, and various card effects. For every additional color type in a deck, the player's maximum starting life is reduced by 5 points, so it is often better to choose only one or two colors in order to avoid having a severe player life handicap. Many cards also have synergy with one another based on certain themes, so selecting cards carefully can improve the effectiveness of a player's deck in the game.
Players must reduce their opponent's life from 40 to 0, typically by attacking with the creature cards they have collected. In order to play cards, the players must spend mana, the max of which is typically increased by sacrificing cards from the hand. On each player's turn, they draw at least one card, can choose to sacrifice and/or play a card from their hand, and then can choose cards on the field to attack with (or defend with, if it is the opponent's turn).
At this time, the reward for beating an NPC in the card game is a number of music tickets. A winning streak can be built, and unique NPCs will also have unique decks and reward more music tickets. There is an option that can be turned on to make the card game a death battle.

Omake Overhaul[]
The Omake overhaul mod added a playable demo of the unimplemented card battle minigame in the original version. Pressing F3 will take you straight to the game with a pre-build deck.
The card game utilizes a mana system similar to that of Duel Master/MTG. However, in addition to the the usual creature cards there are also a couple of spell cards with placeholder images (one of which didn't work). Currently it's not known if said spell cards will be obtainable in-game.
